Profiles of club coaches and administrators:

Dale
Dale started judo during 1979. He achieved 4th Kokyu (Junior Green Belt) in 1987 but then abstained for school work. Continuing later that year, Dale graded to 5th Kyu (Senior Yellow Belt) and then attained 1st Kyu (Senior Brown Belt) in 1993. His 1st Dan grade was awarded in 1996 followed by 2nd Dan in 2003.
His competitive spirit showed through by the winning of many trophies, including national events, but a series of injuries has curtailed participation for the last few years.
Dale took over the running of Stanway Judo Club from Martyn in 2004. He has two children; his seven year old son Jacob, recently won Gold in the Area Open team competition, and his daughter Hannah, who is five, has just started training on the mat as well.
Dale is the current Area Grading Officer Secretary and holds Area Referee Award and Senior Club Coach Award. He is a Life Member of the A.J.A.

Martyn
Martyn started Judo in June 1979 at the age of 8 and quickly discovered the attraction. His first grading in 1979 earned him a full white belt (1st Kokyu). He attained 6th Kokyu (Junior Brown Belt) at age 15 and 1st Kyu (Senior Brown Belt) in 1989. 1st Dan was achieved in 1991 and 2nd Dan in 1995. He took over Stanway Judo Club in 1989.
Always keen on competitions, the height of Martyn's Junior career was to become A.J.A. National Champion in 1986 (45 kg) and be in the winning Area Team for that year. This earned a 'cap' where he represented Gt. Britain against Holland the following year. Many other trophies have been won, including several Junior and Senior Area Championships, National and International competitions.
Martyn has been the A.J.A. South East Area Grading, Refereeing and Coaching Secretary, and in 2001 was appointed as Regional Coach. He is a Life Member of the A.J.A.
Following a move away from Colchester, Martyn handed the club over to Dale and, although his involvement is limited, still retains an interest in both club and area activities.

Christine & Peter
Martyn's Mum and Dad have been involved in Judo as long as he has, but on the administration side. They are A.J.A. Life Members and have recently earned the International Time-keeper Recorder qualification.
Although their involvement at gradings and competitions can be hard work, they find it very rewarding - especially when they see youngsters coming up through the grades after starting out as novices.
