After a very enjoyable two weeks competing in pools and team event for this year's Annual Club
Championships, there were many new winners of trophies and this was a first time event for alot
of our judokas. Our Judoka of the Year went to MATTHEW STEWARD and the Most Improved Player to
JACK WALSH. We are now closed for the holidays but look forward to seeing you all on Friday 10th
January 2003. A reminder that your 2003 fees are due by the end of December please.

Title: A.J.A. South Eastern Area Championships

Stanway judokas completed another successful haul of trophies on Sunday at the above
championships - well done to all. The next event will be the grading on Sunday 3rd November
2002.

Judokas whom have recently attended a competition in Colchester and Dereham, Norfolk all came
away with a trophy/medal. A very good performance and a special well done to Emily Hughes who
was awarded female judoka of the day after competing with boys in the junior open category at
Dereham. Good luck to all those competing in the S.E. Area Open Championships on Sunday.

Hope you have enjoyed watching the Commonwealth games where judo has returned after 12 years

Title: South East Area Team Invitation 30th June 2002

Despite only having two out of three competitors in the 10 and over heavyweight event
- Congratulations goes to Stephen Clark and Gavin Williams for obtaining the GOLD in a tough and
hard fought competition. Also well done to the the 9 and unders, only 7 and 8 years of age, for
giving their all and representing the club in a truly sporting manner.

After a good International Team Event, Colchester Judo Team with Gavin Williams from Stanway
competing, collected a Bronze medal.

Title: Twin Town European Games 4th May 2002

One of our Judokas, GAVIN WILLIAMS has won a place to compete in the Colchester Team Event which
is being held at Highwoods Sports Centre, Brinkley Lane, Colchester on Saturday afternoon. We
all wish the COLCHESTER team Good Luck. Do come along to support them.

Many trophies won at this Age competition - over 100 competitors took part and enjoyed by
all.

Title: Double Gold for Stanway

Club Members Katiy Hughes and Adam Cook both 16, each brought home a Gold Medal from the AJA
National Judo Championships at Birmingham last weekend. They are the first "home-grown" National
Champions at the club. They now qualify to represent England later in the year. Also in the
Bronze medal position were Stephen Clarke and Emily Hughes. Other Stanway Club Members who
travelled to the Midlands were Jack Knightley, Stephanie Saxby and Gavin Williams who was giving
away 40 kgs in his group!

Congratulations to all those who took part in the grading on Sunday - a very good effort from
all the Judokas - well done. Nice to see many of you climbing the ladder and changing your
belts.

Well done to Jack who came 5th out of 19 in the above competition where over 1500 competitors
took part. Quite daunting for a 9 year old to compete with such a large audience - a lot to be
gained from the experience.
